How to choose?

West Coast Wilderness Railway is one of lutruwita/Tasmania’s most unique experiences. Offering a series of wilderness and heritage rail journeys, climb aboard for a special experience from either Queenstown or Strahan in lutruwita/Tasmania’s remote west coast.

Working out how to choose your journey is as easy as working out what’s important to you. All journeys offer live commentary, station stops and activities at each station, so take a look at the summaries below and find out which activity appeals to you:

RINADEENA, RACK & RAINFOREST

Journey through Queenstown, alighting at Lynchford Station, panning for gold like the old-timers. Back onboard, take in 3 kilometres of the famous Abt rack railway and enjoy the feeling of complete immersion in the rainforest at Rinadeena Station. Return journey to Queenstown.

TEEPOOKANA AND THE KING

Depart Regatta Point Station for this 2.5 hour wilderness experience. Follow the King River, deep into the rainforest, stopping at Lower Landing for a short walk. Learn about the local flora and taste forest honey made from endemic flower species before heading back to Strahan.

A short 1.5 hour heritage experience from Queenstown, travelling 20 minutes by train through the town before entering the rainforest fringe and stopping at Lynchford Station, once a small outpost brimming with gold fever.

Previous Experiences

RACK AND GORGE

This 4.5 hour experience from Queenstown takes in the Abt rack and pinion and travels alongside the treacherous King River Gorge.

This experience is currently suspended while upgrades are undertaken along the more remote parts of our railway line.

RIVER AND RAINFOREST

A half-day experience from Regatta Point Station, Strahan, stopping at Lower Landing and Dubbil Barril Stations.

This experience is currently suspended while upgrades are undertaken along the more remote parts of our railway line.

QUEENSTOWN EXPLORER

A full-day experience that runs the full length of the line from Strahan to Queenstown and return.

This journey previously ran throughout the summer season and is currently suspended indefinitely due to limited rolling stock availability, a lack of skilled staff to undertake the experience, increased costs becoming prohibitive and also due to ongoing maintenance.
