Cryptic Falls Express
This journey is on one of our operating Diesel Locomotives. More about our Rolling Stock
This journey is a fully seated on train experience, no stations outside of departure and arrival included.
Step onboard our heritage Drewry diesel train at Regatta Point Station in Strahan and travel inland along the edge of Macquarie Harbour and the banks of the King River. As the train eases away from the harbour, our onboard guides share stories of the railway, the river, and the people who have lived and worked along this line.
The journey passes through the township of Lowana before following the King River upstream, where river flats give way to dense temperate rainforest. This is a quieter stretch of railway, where the changing landscape is best taken in from the carriage windows or, in Premium Class, from the open balcony.
The train pauses near Cryptic Falls, which as part of its allure, is also known as Mystic Falls. When rain flows on the west, water spills through the forest beside the line, a reminder of how closely the railway follows the contours of the land and the challenges it brought for those who built it.
Throughout the journey, onboard commentary brings the landscape and history to life. A honey tasting is included for all guests, featuring local honey from endemic Tasmanian flora, shared as part of the storytelling experience.
This short return journey offers a relaxed and accessible introduction to the West Coast’s rivers, rainforest, and railway heritage.
When you return to Strahan, take some time to explore Regatta Point Station. Visit the museum room to discover original artefacts and firsthand accounts from those who once lived along the line, and enjoy something to eat or drink at Tracks on Point Café.
Frequently Asked Questions
We do recommend booking around 4-6 weeks in advance where possible to secure your preferred journey. In the peak summer months, you may need to consider booking further in advance to avoid missing out.
Tickets can be purchased on the day if availability allows, this is more often in the off-season winter months or due to a late cancellation.
Give one of our friendly reservations team members a call on (03) 6471 100 to explain, where possible we will simply switch your booking to the correct journey. This will depend on seating availability on the other journey and day of travel, however we will do our best to help get you back on track.
Currently our steam trains operate out of the Queenstown station, on our Rinadeena, Rack and Rainforest, and Lynchford Express journeys.
The steam engines are needed at this end of the line to run the Rack and Pinion section of the track.
Usually, yes. During one half of the journey you will face in one direction, but once the train travels in the opposite direction (on the way back to your original departure station), so will you. This means you will face backwards either during the first or second half of your journey. As the train moves quite slowly, motion sickness is exceptionally rare, however, should you have any concerns about this, please call our team directly at least 24 hours prior to your departure.
Not always, no. Heritage diesel locomotives were used on the section of line between Strahan and Dubbil Barril from the 1950s, and they are still in service. If your journey travels along the Abt Rack and Pinion section, however, you will definitely be onboard a steam train.
